A Real Thomas Jefferson Experience January 25, 2007

Filed under: book recommendation, education — amyrhoads @ 10:29 pm

A Thomas Jefferson Education is really about realizing your responsibility as an individual to educate yourself but does so in a manner where you feel it’s a privilege. It’s an environment where policy and regulation get out of the way and let teachers inspire and children educate themselves. It’s a place where children and adults alike learn how to think, how to analyze, how to relate and how to be leaders. It is a school that is lead by a spirit of goodness and greatness. It is a school that helps children feel comfortable in their skin and confident in who they are and what they can become. It’s a school where learning is sought after even “after-hours”. It is a school that paves the way for children to be solid leaders of their families, communities and the nation.

Pinnacle Learning Center is where a real TJED takes place. It’s in Lindon and they really put the mentor/classic approach to work. Dr. Kimber was running the school up until this past September. Now Dr. Kimber is writing “curriculum” for the schools that apply the mentor/classic method.

The other day I was reading a blog and I noticed that the principal from Kimber Academy had left a comment. I immediately emailed him and told him how much I admire a school like Kimber Academy that applies the TJED approach. He emailed back and asked me to come to the school and have a look for myself. I did.

As I walked in the school I was greeted by smiling students, teachers and a few parents. The walls were decorated with pictures of the Prophet and apostles and leaders of our nation. The children were just finishing up a break.

They have a snack bar where treats can be bought. The young lady running the snack bar was being mentored and was learning about profit margins. She could go to Costco and by Snickers to sell and get a smaller profit margin or she could purchase Oreo packages and get a 100% return on her money. The learning process was amazing. She had a job and responsibility. She was a steward over the schools money and she was learning entrepreneurship skills. After she learned about that her brain is turned on and she realizes that there are more possibilities out there and more ways she can be a good steward, expand that knowledge and be responsible. What could be better than that?

I sat and listened to the 9-11 year-olds begin their class. The teacher had thought that some one had done something that was not very nice to another student and the teacher had gotten wind of that and suggested they all write apology letters to the girl. The teacher started the class explaining the situation as she new it to the children. They listened to her but then explained to her the situation as it happened. The teacher had made a mistake. Then an amazing thing happened…the teacher actually treated them like adults and listened and went right in to her lesson.

They began giving reports and the children stood with confidence one by one and gave their report. The other children gave comments, feedback and questioned what they were hearing to gain a better understanding. It was a great thing to witness.

I then went to visit the 5-8 year-olds. They were al gathered around a table learning. Many of them were too excited to have a visitor to pay attention to their lesson, but with a little encouragement were back on task. On the whiteboard were magnets of a Book of Mormon time line and more pictures of leaders of the Church. The children were adorable and very well mannered.

Next I went to visit the seniors. They were having their Book of Mormon class. A few parents were joining the class and they came prepared with their homework too. The teacher was leading a discussion. Questions were asked. Hands flew into the air. Their comments were respected as well as challenged to ensure a solid understanding. They were having fun and learning a great deal. They were explaining the symbolism of Moroni renting his garment, what tokens are and much much more. I walked away knowing that I was witnessing a TJED school in session.

My overall impression of the school was so in-line with what the TJED book teaches, I walked away feeling so inspired. I am coming back on Wednesday to teach a class on entrepreneurship and genealogy and I may even volunteer to teach some electives for them like dance and the principal even suggested a class like genealogy for kids or something. Anyone who may want to get involved is welcome to do so. You could volunteer your time (or get paid) to teach an elective a few times a week. Today was karate day! There are only about 36 students there now, but they are constantly growing.

Teachers inspire. Students educate. Inspiration and education was what was happening at Pinnacle Learning Center, right here in Lindon, Utah. Those children are preparing themselves for greatness. The teachers are first class mentors. The students are first class educators.

Teachers inspire.

Children educate.

“entrepreneurial personality” January 17, 2007

Filed under: entrepreneur — amyrhoads @ 5:41 pm

I got the following email from a friend through Producer Revolution. I can’t say enough how much I agree with this email. I used to shy away from starting my own thing because I do not consider myself a major risk taker. However, after reading The E-Myth, I have come to understand that entrepreneurs are, in fact, all about reducing the risk. Of course, there are risks involved, but by practicing solid business principles, you greatly minimize the risk and don’t just dive in and see what happens.

I feel that entrepreneurialism is more of a mindset than anything else. You are consistently trying to keep yourself in check, in balance if you will, of your three “selves”of: technician, manager and entrepreneur. This isn’t easy but if you are honest with yourself about your progress and realize that you need to evaluate yourself daily, you can be extremely successful.

_________

One of the fallacies of the traditional financial industry is that one must be willing to tolerate high risk in order to enjoy high returns. The irony is that Producers are seen as high risk-takers, yet in reality, they do everything in their power to mitigate risk. One of the most influential and widely read modern business thinkers, Peter Drucker, shares a story in his book Innovation and Entrepreneurship that speaks of this. He writes, “.I attended a university symposium on entrepreneurship at which a number of psychologists spoke. Although their papers disagreed on everything else, they all talked of an ‘entrepreneurial personality,’ which was characterized by a ‘propensity for risk-taking.’ A well-known and successful innovator and entrepreneur.was then asked to comment. He said: ‘I find myself baffled by your papers. I think I know as many successful innovators and entrepreneurs as anyone, beginning with myself. I have never come across an ‘entrepreneurial personality.’ The successful ones I know all have, however, one thing-and only one thing-in common: they are not ‘risk-takers.’ They try to define the risks they have to take and to minimize them as much as possible. Otherwise none of us could have succeeded.’” Drucker then concludes, “The innovators I know are successful to the extent to which they define risks and confine them.Successful innovators are conservative. They have to be. They are not ‘risk-focused’; they are ‘opportunity-focused.’”

Word of the Day: Anchor Text January 16, 2007

Filed under: Word of the Day — amyrhoads @ 5:51 am

I have been reading a lot about building Web pages etc. One word that I have never looked up, however, was anchor text. I didn’t know that anchor text weighed so heavily in your SEO techniques (what can I say, I am a newbie) :)

Here are two places that explained anchor text a lot better than I could. The first just describes anchor text and the second is anchor text optimization.

Organizational Tip #2 January 9, 2007

OK. So I really like organization so here is another tip!

#2 Make your “Wish-list” then tuck it away!

Especially when you are just starting out, money should be spent with the up-most caution. When you are drawing your sketch of what you want your office to look like write in what equipment will go where–and don’t forget to use your wall pace…I will talk a lot more on this later. Write down a list of all of the supplies that you need and then a separate list of things that you want (and be honest). This will help you not only make your dollar stretch, it will help you not to purchase duplicate equipment, furniture and supplies. Don’t be afraid to let your office can grow with your business.

Positive Imaging January 8, 2007

Filed under: book recommendation — amyrhoads @ 3:09 am

I have been reading a lot lately and one of the books I just finished was Power of Positive Imaging, by Norman Vincent Peale. It was a great book for me to read. I have been noticing how the slightest negative thought can really be destructive to you and others around you. This book explains the practice of positive imaging in most any circumstance. Peale mentions the outline, or formula if you will, of positive imaging and I want to share them here.

1) the goal

2) the purpose

3) prayer activity

4) thoughtful planning

5) innovative thinking

6) enthusiasum

7) organized hard work

8)always holding the image of success firmly in your mind

These things are not easily accomplished but, like anything, if you practice you will see the fruits of your labors. For more in-depth understanding, pick up the book and give it a try. I encourage you practice harnessing the power of your mind and for once in for all stop that negative thinking!

Organizational Tip #1 January 8, 2007

Filed under: Workplace Organization — amyrhoads @ 2:20 am

This blog will have many tips that will help you become more efficient in the office. I love organization. I love the freedom it gives you as you gain “more” time and make small changes in your life that not only empower you, but truly help you feel happy and accomplished.

#1 The Start Up Set Up

So many times we have our noses in our business plan and all of the other planning we forget to plan for other things like the set up of our office space. Your office space is your home away from home (or maybe it’s even in your home :) ) This space should not only have the necessary equipment that an office should have, but it should be placed in the most efficient and effective places.

Do a quick check of electrical outlets and draw a brief sketch of what you want your office space to look like. (This can be done for those of us that already have our office spaces set up too. It’s never too late to be more productive. ;) Do this before you even purchase your first piece of equipment. Where can the equipment be placed to enhance workflow? If you use your fax machine a lot, don’t put it on the other side of the room from your desk. Is there a big window in your office? Make sure that the sunlight won’t affect your ability to work due to glare on your computer screen, getting too hot or getting headaches.

Getting organized does not happen over night. It takes time and planning. Just remember to start where you are and never let an opportunity pass you by to better yourself and your business.

Tag! I’m it! January 3, 2007

Well, thanks to Michael Eagar you get to know some strange and wonderful facts about yours truly :)

#1 My husband and I breed snakes and sell them.

I can’t go in to all of the particulars at the moment because we are trying to get a business license and the city of Provo is making it very difficult to do so. However, if you want to learn more, check out our site at www.Suboc.com .

#2 I am the poster child for car wrecks!

I think I stopped counting after I hit the double digits! I have either been a driver or a passenger and for the record…NONE of them have been my fault ;) I feel very confident in stating the fact that I have a great work to do on this earth and no amount of car wrecks is going to stop me :)

#3 I was a dance teacher for several years.

I love to dance! I have not taught dance in a few years, but I am a student in salsa and will also pick up swing again in January. I have many favorite styles. They all have their own beauty. I love the softness and extension of lyrical but also the ######## funk of hip hop and jazz. I am versed in many different styles of dance and they are all just as beautiful as the next! I could never pick a favorite…

#4 I LOVE chocolate!

I swear there was a time in high school where I would have a chocolate protein shake for breakfast, a Snickers for lunch and then chocolate ice cream for dinner! Those were the good ‘ole days :) I am probably not too far off from the truth actually… I have cleaned up my habits since then, but I will NEVER stop loving chocolate.

#5 I have a real passion for photography.

I have always loved taking pictures and seeing what I could do different the next time, what angles I could come up with and took pride in hardly ever centering my pictures :) I took a couple of photography classes in college and I have been severely hooked ever since. I loved getting to develop my own pictures. I have a couple of professional photographers in my current ward and I am trying to glean and learn from them all that I can. I am waiting to get my dream SLR camera (hopefully) soon… My love for photography comes in handy for our snake business too because I like doing nature photography and am not afraid of getting down eye level with animals (and people for that matter ;) and doing trying new things!

Well, I hope that I still have friends after this post and that you aren’t afraid to carpool with me :)

Comments are welcome!

Happy New Year January 3, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — amyrhoads @ 6:18 am

Well, I have tried switching blogs a few times in the past few months, but I have settled back on this one.  :)   Please change your blog roll to this url.

2006 has been a very challenging year and I look forward with great excitement for 2007. I can’t help to think that this feeling of renewal, joy and fresh courage for the year to come has much to do with spending the previous month or two pondering on the Savior and the true meaning of Christmas and what His life means for us.

Thanks to everyone for showing me encouragement and support by your actions and thoughts. I hope you all have a wonderful new year with more resolve to do what is right, become people of action and tackle your challenges head on!
